Barron Wood Distribution Company History

Barron Wood Distribution was formed by John and David Fairbrother in 1993 on their family farm in Tarleton, Lancashire. After working for a number of years at other transport companies across the North West of England, the enterprising brothers saw an opportunity to set-up their own business delivering fresh produce throughout England.

Over the next few years, Barron Wood Distribution (bwd) grew rapidly, expanding into general haulage servicing a diverse range of manufacturing and distribution clients as well as continuing to deliver produce. John and David, supported by their sister Lucy, invested in the business and sought out new opportunities in other areas of the UK as the company’s reputation for reliability and competitiveness spread. In 2002, a new depot was opened in Glasgow to act as a second strategically placed transport hub. 2010 was a landmark year that saw two big moves for the business. The Glasgow depot relocated to larger premises and the head office moved to a purpose-built site in Much Hoole, just outside of Preston, with easy access to the UKs strategic road network. In 2013, bwd launched its European road freight business offering the same low cost, reliable transport service for import and export business as well as UK-wide transport solutions. A specialist division for construction was also established in 2015. Today, bwd operates in virtually every industry sector and every region of the UK and Europe. The owners, David and John, remain at the helm and their entrepreneurial spirit is inspiring the next generation of bwd transport experts within their extremely loyal and hard-working team.

The bwd Approach to CSR

The company aims to achieve its business objectives in a responsible manner, recognising the economic, social and environmental impacts of its activities.

Whilst the formal reporting of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is relatively new to the business, the company has been providing initiatives and cost-effective solutions to its customers for many years.

The concept of providing CSR is fully integrated into the long-term strategic approach for the business; thus reducing waste, improving the welfare of staff and engaging with the local community are paramount.

The company’s innovative approach to the logistics industry and most of all the strength and wealth of experience throughout its workforce provide the foundations needed to deliver a successful and sustainable CSR strategy.
